Roque Bluffs State Park
Roque Bluffs State Park has a little bit of something for everyone— hiking trails, picnic areas, a playground, ocean and pond swimming, boating, kayaking, fishing, and more!
The Park is located south of Machias on Schoppee Point Road in the small town of Roque Bluff. The 274 acres of protected lands was acquired by the Maine State Park Commission in 1969.
One side of the park is home to a gorgeous, crescent-shaped salt water beach made up of both soft sand and pebbles. Opposite the ocean beach is Simpson Pond, freshwater pond that is dog-friendly and surrounded by picnic areas and a small playground.
The north side of the park is home to several intersecting hiking trails. They can be accessed by two parking lots; one is to the left of the Roque Bluffs road right before it splits and the other parking lot is near the East side of Simpson Pond. The trails move through forests, fields, and alongside pond cove. The trails range from easy to moderate and are both kid and pet friendly. My favorite trail was the Pond Cove trail which ends with a cute little picnic spot that provides scenic views of Englishman’s Bay.
Whether you’re looking for somewhere to enjoy an ocean day, lake day, picnic spot, or oceanfront hiking, Roque Bluffs has something for everyone! Escape the busy towns of DownEast Maine and come enjoy this quiet state park instead!
Happy exploring, friends!
