Hiking Step Falls
PSA: Step Falls is incredibly busy between 11:00a.m. and 3:00p.m. from June-September and the parking lot closes to additional cars once it is full. Parking is not permitted along Route 26, so please plan ahead and have an alternate activity planned if and when the parking lot is full.
Step Falls Preserve encompasses 24 acres of land that surrounds Wight Brook in Newry Maine. The preserve is home to hiking trails, waterfalls, swimming spots, and gorgeous mountain views.
In October of 2012, the title for Step Falls was given to the Mahoosuc Land Trust from the Nature Conservancy. During the Summer of 2013, the Mahoosuc Land Trust spent time rebuilding the parking lot and improving the trails. Every year, the preserve becomes busier and busier, especially on weekends during the warmer months. If you’re planning on visiting during the Summer, please have a backup plan or two in case the parking lot is full!
Step Falls is located off Route 26 in Newry, Maine. From Bethel, head north on Route 2 and then turn left onto Bear River Road (also known as Route 26) drive 13.7 miles and the preserve will be on your right before you enter Grafton Notch State Park.
From the parking lot, the trail follows Wight Brook the whole way. It begins further away from the brook, winding through the forest as it gradually ascends up to the top of the falls. Along the trail there are several viewpoints and opportunities to stop and enjoy several waterfalls. Further up the trail, there are deeper pools that are swimmable. At the very top of the falls, there are fantastic views of surrounding Western Maine mountains.
I like to visit during the Spring, when the water is the highest. It can be buggy, but a little bug spray and a light breeze go a long way. I like to make several stops while hiking the trail to enjoy the cool breeze off the brook. The top of the falls is the perfect spot for a little picnic. During hot Summer days, cool off by swimming in one of the refreshing pools.
Step Falls is a scenic, family-friendly hike that is enjoyable for all ability levels. Pack a lunch, bathing suit, and water shoes so you can really take advantage of all the falls, pools, and everything in between!
Happy exploring, friends!
