In Ellsworth, turn onto ME-3 East (signs for Mount Desert Island / Bar Harbor). Follow ME-3 for about 17 miles until you cross the bridge onto Mount Desert Island. After crossing the bridge, stay right to continue on ME-102 South toward Southwest Harbor. Continue on ME-102 through Somesville and Southwest Harbor. When you come to the intersection of 102 and 102A, turn left for 102A (Seawall Road). The Wonderland Trail will be on your left in about 4 miles, after passing by the Seawall.

There is a small paved parking lot for this trailhead that can fit about 10-15 cars. Parking is also permitted on the side of the road—just make sure your car is fully off the road.
Wonderland Trail Description
Wonderland Trail (1.4 miles, easy)
This 1.4-mile out and back trail is comprised of a wide, flat gravel road that leads to a small peninsula that is comprised of a spruce forest. Although the trail is mostly flat, there are some spots that I would consider technical, due to rocks, roots, and uneven surfaces.
The Viewpoint of Wonderland Trail
The Wonderland Trail ends at a scenic peninsula that provides ample views of Bennett Cove, nearby islands, and the Atlantic Ocean. If you look closely (or bring binoculars) you may see many birds, seals, and other sea creatures resting on rocks throughout the coves. This is a great spot to bring a picnic and watch the waves crash into the rocks.
Insider Tips for Visiting the Wonderland Trail
The Wonderland Trail is a part of Acadia National Park—so a park entrance pass is required. You must purchase and display the pass on your dashboard.
Bring a pair of binoculars to help spot wildlife and birds.
The best time to visit is from June-October when the temperatures are warm.
Be sure to stop by nearby Bass Harbor Lighthouse either before or after your hike.
Best nearby eats:
Clarke Point Cafe: Their breakfast sandwiches and eggs Benedict are outstanding.
Bub’s Burritos: They make a mean burrito and margarita.
Beal’s Lobster Pier: an iconic waterfront restaurant that serves fresh and fried seafood
