Lake Saint George State Park

Lake Saint George State Park is located on the Western side of Saint George Lake in beautiful Liberty Maine. A short drive from Bangor, Waterville, and Augusta, this state park offers grassy wooded and waterfront campsites, a playground, kayak and canoe rentals, a swimming area, covered and uncovered picnic spots, and plenty of gorgeous lake views.

One thing I really enjoy and appreciate about all of the Maine state parks is how vastly different they all are. As soon as we pulled up to the information booth, I was surprised to find out that we had arrived at a state park. Directly in front of us in the middle of the park was a large white house and barn and to the right was the campground and to the left was the day use area. I don’t know about you, but I have never seen a home right smack dab in the middle of a state park.

First, we took a stroll around the campground. There were well-kept single-stall bathrooms and plenty of grassy campsites, perfect for families that have young kids. I personally preferred the waterfront sites to the woodsy sites, as the sites in the woods sat right next to the busy road.

I couldn’t believe how large the day-use area was. I could tell that it was the most utilized part of the park. There was a large dock that was home to kayaks, canoes, and what I can only describe as a water bicycle. There were picnic tables and charcoal grills scattered amongst the shoreline, most of which were already occupied once we showed up. Instead of a beach, there were large rock steps leading down to a sandy swimming area. Next to the swimming area was a playground and a large pavilion filled with picnic tables. The day we visited, it was 90 degrees and sunny, so everyone was avoiding the hot slides and opting for the shaded picnic spots. There were also additional single-stall bathrooms available in the day-use area.

I think my favorite part of visiting the park was the absence of sand. There is literally grass everywhere, even leading up to the swimming area, which was refreshing. To me, there is no better feeling than leaving a day at the lake with no sand in your shoes. Also, the day-use area seemed to be very pet-friendly, which you don’t usually see at state parks. To me, that is another huge bonus!

If you’re looking for a lakefront getaway where you can bring kids AND the dog for a day of family fun in the sun, visit Lake Saint George State Park!

Happy exploring, friends!
